CFE-E. Noah MALTBY, b. Sept. 23, 1744 at Branford (Jos.3, Dan.2, Wm.1). He m. Huldah ---- probably about 1770.

In 1780 he enlisted in the Rev. War. (Ref. p. 562. Conn. in Rev. War)

"Maltbye, Noah, private, Goshen, 17th Regt. Conn. Col. Sheldon's "for defence of coast and forest until 1st March, 1780."

From "Goshen Statistics and Family History, by Lewis M. Norton, Vol. I, p. 548/9," we quote the following:

"Noah Maltbie was from Salisbury, Conn., to Goshen. He pur- chased lands of Stephen Willcox, May 16, 1776, 75 acres, lying West of the present house of William Miles, adjoining to Cornwall line."

(Note. It would appear that Noah married while in Salisbury).

In "1764. Noah Maltby admitted from the church at Springfield (Mass.) to the Salisbury church." At this time he would have been twenty years of age. From Salisbury he went to Goshen and lastly to Woodbury, Conn. He died prior to 1786.

(Woodbury Deeds, Vol. 24, p. 209)

"Jonathan Baker of Woodbury to Noah Maltby of Goshen, for #180, 57 acres of land in Woodbury lying on each side of the east meadow brook, bounded:---

S. Highway
W. Thomas Judson
N. Nathan and Abijah Martin
E. Asabel Martin

There is a dwelling-house and barn standing on the premisses."

                            "2 Feb. 1785."
(Vol. 25, p. 25)

"Asabel Martin of Woodbury to Noah Maltbie of Woodbury, for #51, 10 shillings--15 acres of land in Woodbury on the east side of the east meadow brook, bounded:---

S. and E. Highway.
N. Abijah Martin. "18 May, 1785"
W. said Maltbie."

(Woodbury Probate Rec., Vol. IX, p. 10)

"At a Court of Probate held at Woodbury, Jan. 3, 1786.

"Huldah Maltby, the sole executor of the Last Will and Testamony of Noah Maltby late of Woodbury, deceased, appeared in Court and exhibited the Will and moved to have it approved, which being read and considered is approved and ordered to be recorded as follows:

"In the Name of God Amen--I Noah Maltby of Woodbury, in Litchfield County, being sound of mind and memory, (Thanks to the Most High God) and calling to mind and duly considering the uncertainty of human life, that it is appointed all men once to die, do therefore make this my last Will and Testament.

First and principally I commit my soul into Hands of my Almighty and Blessed Master, trusting in his mercy through the merit of my dear Redeemer for the Remission of all my sins. My body I commit to the Earth to be decently Buried at the discretion of executor here after mentioned and as touching such Worldly Estate as it hath pleased Almighty God in the course of his wise Providence to bless me with, after my just Debts are paid. I Give, Devise and Bequesthe in the following manner:---

Imprimis: To my Beloved wife Huldah I give my Negro woman, Rose, to be her own proper estate. Also my will is that my beloved wife Huldah have the improvement of all my Estate, both Real and personal to bring up my family of children with, until such time as each one of them become of lawful age, so long as she shall continue my Widow and no longer.

Item. To my eldest son Edin I give a double portion of my real estate to him and his heirs for ever.

To the rest of my children, both sons and daughters I give the remainder of my estate to be equally divided among them when they shall become of Lawful age and Lastly-

I do hereby constitute and appoint my beloved wife Huldah to be my sole executor to this my last Will and Testament and I do hereby utterly Revoke, Disavow and make Void all other Wills and Testaments heretofore made by me, Declaring, Ratifying and confirming this and this only to be my Last Will and Testament, in witness whereof I have hereby set my hand and seal this 29th day of November, 1785.

                        (signed) Noah Maltby.
Signed, Sealed, Published, Declared and Pronounced in the presence of us: Elisha Attwood
Mary Cramer
Henry Skilton."

(Vol. IX, p. 25)

"At a Court of Probate held at Woodbury, 1 March. 1792. person- ally appeared Noah Maltby, son of Noah Maltby, late of Woodbury, deceased.---a minor about seventeen years old and made choice of his mother, Huldah Maltby, to be his guardian, which is allowed, sufficient bond being given. Daniel Sherman, Jr. Clerk." (Vol.30, p. 209)

                                 "17 Feb. 1797"

"Huldah Maltbie, Adin Maltbie and Noah Maltbie, all of Woodbury-- To Salmon Hawley, of Huntington--all our rights, title and interest in a piece of land in the north part of Woodbury, being the land bought of Asabel Martin, by a Deed dated 18 May 1785/6 to Noah Maltbie and by a Deed from Jonathan Baker, dated 2 Feb. 1785, containing 52 acres--with the buildings on same. We refer to the said deeds for a particular description of the land. The whole lies undivided among the heirs of Noah Maltbie, dec'd.

The said Huldah owns the use and improvement of the whole during her natural life and the said Adin owns 2/9 of the whole, at her decease, and the said Noah owns 1/9 of the whole."

(Vol. 30. Page 212) 31 Jan. 1798

"Frederick Maltby of Woodbury, to Salmon Hawley of Woodbury. The 1/9 part of a certain piece of land in the northwest part of Woodbury, for description of which reference may be had to a deed of Asabel Martin, dated 18 May 1785 and one by Jonathan Baker dated 2 Feb. 1785. The said premises are now undivided among the heirs of Noah Maltby. The whole is subject to the use and improvement of Huldah Maltby, widow of said Noah, during her natural life."

The following record seems to pertain to Huldah, daughter of Noah.

"Ebenezer Kasson Knapp and Huldah his wife, of Litchfield, convey to Salmon Hawley their right in the land described in the pre- ceeding deeds."

The First Census of the United States, 1790, records:
                    "Heads of Families."
"Huldah Maltbie of Woodbury.
1 male over 16
3 males under 16
4 females.

Note. Apparently there were eight children as Edin (or Adin) had 2/9 and the rest 1/9th. *As Ebenezer Kasson Knapp was born "12-6-1763," and Huldah, dau. of Noah and Huldah Maltby was born in 1771, it seems certain it was not the widow Huldah, as Noah was born in 1744. He died in Onondago Valley, N. Y. (See further).

Salisbury, Litchfield Co., as at the N.W. corner of Conn. On my atlas, about five air miles East of Salisbury is a place called "Maltby's Siding." It is due North of Falls Village.

Note. V.264. Was she Mary? A Mary Maltby was second wife of Isaac Peck of Watertown, Conn., he born 1782. They had children: Jeremiah, Frederick and Lemuel.

As the name of the wife of Joseph Maltby is not known, is it possible that she was a Crittenden, of Lenox, sells to Joseph in 1776, and in 1779, Huldah Crittenden witnesses a Lenox deed of Joseph's younger brother, William Maltby. Susanna Crittenden of Durham, mar. in 1744/5 Benjamin Merriman of Walling- ford. Here may be a clue to the name of the unknown wife in the Crittenden family.

Noah Maltby, another brother of Joseph, above had a wife Huldah-- whose surname is unknown. They named their eldest child Huldah, b. in 1771 at Salisbury, Conn. Noah made his will in 1785.
